The soccer pitch at Bairnsdale High School is a high wear zone where energetic students played sport throughout the day, more so at lunch time. The high wear zones with little or no water meant that many areas were reduced to bare earth.
To rejuvenate the area Frith’s Plumbing and Gasfitting was commissioned to design and install a water system which would deliver precisely the right amount of water year round to maintain a lush cover of grass.
Utilising a bore on the site of the school, Frith’s installed a 220,000 litre holding tank then installed an electric pump to draw the underground water to the surface. With a large capacity tank providing the essential water supply, a network of sprinklers was installed on the grassed area. This involved a trenching machine, hundreds of meters of poly pipe, electronic valves and multiple sprinkler heads.
The ‘brains’ of the system is an advanced computer controlled programmable management system which delivers precisely the right amount of water, in stages, to each designated watering zone.
The Frith’s system is so advanced that it can be controlled by a Smart-Phone app.
The upshot of the new irrigation system is that grass is now growing in areas where previously it was bare earth starved of water. And the students at Bairnsdale Secondary College now have lush green playing fields to enjoy year-round.
